Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he enjoyed betting on different card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he played extensive hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The real improvement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was a superb student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best female players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
