Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.

Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker player in the world by quite a few of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching turning 1. His grandpa taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wanted to pickup whatever he could about poker. He routinely told his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not let the adverse feedback from other people annihilate his goal of being one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.

He began playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a learning period and winning wasn’t a common outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated many of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He states that he’s learning every day and is incredibly humble about his success. Phil admits to making blunders in each game of poker and always strives to get better.

Although Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a regular basis.

Gus Hansen had a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only player to achieve closing table in 3 of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he paid $400, 000 to play. You might recall one of the largest pots in big stakes poker history against Daniel Negreanu. Gus secured a large pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Gus has earned many televised poker appearances and is considered to be one of the greatest bettors in the world. While wagering on internet poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. Gus regularly competes in the 200/400 No Limit maximum buy-in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus frequently buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I believe Hansen is an amazing poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless he is penniless, he has no reason to sit at the game with the min buy in.

Buying in for the min takes most of the ability out of big stack poker. Gus is assumed to be 1 of the greatest players anywhere in the world but he can’t buy in for the full amount. I think television can skew our view of the real world sometimes. The greatest players anywhere in the world could be guys you have won’t have heard of before. Gus can be found competing in net poker on Full Tilt. He commonly competes in big stakes omaha high and texas hold’em. Gus has shown himself as a competition player. Can he back up his skills in money games?
