Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and concentrate more on poker.
The definite advancement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would frequently play against each other. Howard was able to access several of the foremost players in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
