Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he liked participating in different card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After graduating from high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The definite improvement in his skills happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would regularly challenge one another. He had access into several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his logical thinking skills. He used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest female players the poker arena ever. He headed to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
