Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he liked playing different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and headed to New York to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and focus even more on the game.

The definite advancement in his abilities began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly wager against one another. He had access into several of the best players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his cunning thinking skills. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
