Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker player in the world by most of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup every little thing he could about poker. He routinely told his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the adverse feedback from other people annihilate his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He began competing intently after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for Phil were a teaching experience and coming away with a win was not a regular thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the last table he defeated many of the better known pros which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to discipline and a continuing passion for poker. He states that he is picking up skills every day and is quite humble about his achievements. He admits to making mistakes every single session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Despite the fact that Phil has won some large tournaments, he favors winning cash games on a regular basis.
