Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an exciting range of betting options and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, and a few battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
