Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and concentrate more on poker.
The actual improvement in his skills happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard had access into several of the best players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the best female players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
