Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he liked playing numerous card games when he was young. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would frequently wager against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best players in chess. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
