Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complex initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha High-Low provides an exciting collection of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high hand, and a few battling for the low. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
