Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems difficult at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of wagering options and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, along with several battling for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
