Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same concept in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complex at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha High-Low provides an overwhelming range of betting choices and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high, and many trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to compete in Omaha/8.
