Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved taking part in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he might improve his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus attention more on the game.
The real advancement in his game happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly challenge each other. He was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking abilities. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
