Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi low starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing range of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high, as well as several trying for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
